Privacy Policy
Last updated: March 23, 2026
SafePin is a family communication tool that helps adult children stay connected with their aging parents through simple daily check-ins. We believe privacy is a fundamental right, and we have built SafePin with that belief at its core.
This policy explains what data we collect, why we collect it, how we store it, and your rights over that data. We have written it in plain English because you should not need a law degree to understand how your information is handled.
What we collect and why
We collect only what is necessary to make SafePin work:
| Data | Why we need it |
|---|---|
| Parent name, child name | To personalize the check-in experience and notifications |
| Check-in timestamps | To track daily check-ins and trigger alerts when check-ins are missed |
| Voice notes (optional) | To let parents send a short audio message with their check-in |
| Phone numbers | To send SMS notifications when check-ins are missed (escalation feature) |
| Email address | For our waitlist signup and account-related communications |
Data we NEVER collect
We want to be crystal clear about what SafePin does not touch:
- ✕Location data — we never track where your parent is
- ✕Health or medical data — SafePin is not a medical device and does not monitor health
- ✕Browsing history or app usage — we do not track what you do on your phone
- ✕Contacts — we never access your address book; we only use phone numbers you explicitly provide
- ✕Photos or videos — we do not access your camera or photo library
- ✕Biometric data — no fingerprints, face scans, or similar data
How your data is stored
SafePin uses Apple's CloudKit (iCloud) to store your data. Specifically, we use CloudKit's private database, which means:
- Your data is stored in your own iCloud account, encrypted by Apple
- We, the developers of SafePin, cannot read, access, or see your personal data
- Apple manages the encryption and security of your data in accordance with their own privacy policies
- Your data is protected by whatever security you have on your Apple ID (including two-factor authentication)
Voice notes are stored as audio files within your private CloudKit database and are subject to the same protections.
Who we share data with
We share data with exactly one third party, and only for one purpose:
Twilio (SMS delivery)
When you enable SMS escalation, we send phone numbers to Twilio so they can deliver text messages on our behalf. Twilio processes this data solely to deliver the SMS and is bound by their own privacy policy and data processing agreements. No other personal data is shared with Twilio.
We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal data to anyone. We do not use your data for advertising. We do not share data with data brokers.
Data retention
Because your data lives in your own iCloud account via CloudKit's private database, your data exists as long as you keep it. When you delete data within SafePin, it is removed from your iCloud storage.
Waitlist email addresses are stored on our servers and are retained only until the waitlist period ends or you request removal, whichever comes first.
Phone numbers sent to Twilio for SMS delivery are not stored by us beyond what is needed to send the message. Twilio's own retention policies apply to data they process.
Your rights
Regardless of where you live, we believe you should have full control over your data. You have the right to:
- Access — Know what data SafePin has about you
- Delete — Remove your data at any time by deleting it within the app or by deleting the app and its associated iCloud data
- Portability — Request a copy of your data in a standard format
- Correction — Update or correct your information at any time within the app
- Withdraw consent — Stop using any optional features (like voice notes or SMS escalation) at any time
- Complaint — Lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority if you believe your rights have been violated
These rights apply whether you are covered by the GDPR (European Union), CCPA (California), PIPL (China), or any other privacy regulation. To exercise any of these rights, contact us at privacy@safepin.app.
Children's privacy
SafePin is designed for adult children checking in on their aging parents. It is not intended for use by anyone under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.
If you believe that a child under 13 has provided us with personal information, please contact us at privacy@safepin.app and we will promptly delete it.
Important disclaimer
SafePin is a family communication tool. It is not a medical device, emergency service, or health monitoring system. It does not replace calling emergency services, regular medical check-ups, or professional caregiving. If you have concerns about your parent's health or safety, please contact the appropriate emergency services in your area.
Changes to this policy
We may update this privacy policy from time to time. If we make significant changes, we will notify you through the app or by email. The "Last updated" date at the top of this page always reflects the most recent version.
